1. During my time being in sculpture 2, I used a variety of tools to help my artwork along. When working with clay, I used the pottery wheel to make my piece. Using this tool helped to get a symmetrical shape that is very hard to achieve without the help of the wheel. the Pottery wheel is often used when creating pieces that need rounded and even shapes such as bowls and mugs. Additionally, when creating my piece which went into the pit fire, I used the wheel to trim the edges to give my bowl a smooth and professional outer appearance. 2. At the beginning of the semester i had very limited knowledge about the usefulness of certain tools in sculpture or how to use them. Not long after trying to make my first pottery piece did i realize how hard it was to make a symmetrical piece. i had a lot of trial and error until i decided to try and throw my piece on a wheel. It takes lots of practice to learn how to use a pottery wheel and i have still not perfected the craft but my experience has definitely allowed for improvement and taught me how incredibly valuable the use of tools can be in art. 3. During this year of sculpture i really enjoyed working with clay. In previous years when i have used the material, I never realized quite how versatile the substance was. I used clay in many of my pieces and i think that is is a really unique medium to sculpt with because your can use in in so many different ways and apply a lot of different techniques to it for incredibly varied results. I also think that its maulbility makes it a perfect substance for sculptures such as my baby head sculpture because it is hard to think of another substance that could bend so easily yet be so rigid in its final result. 4. One technique that i used during this semester was sgraffito. Sgraffito is the process of scratching the upper layer of and underglaze on leather hard clay to reveal the unglazed portion underneath. Sgraffito is a unique technique because it emphasizes negative space as opposed to positive space as we are use to seeing. This method was successful for me because it allowed me to use a stencil when carving out the tree figure and i am otherwise not the best at drawing. 5. My most successful project this year was definitely my garden hat. The theme behind the piece was object to art so i decided to take a straw hat and turn it into a garden scene. When making the hat i used many different material and colors to get a varied piece that was eye catching an unique. I used moss for the grass to get a realistic look and coffee ground for the dirt which ended up giving the hat a very natural smell. During the processes i mainly used hot glue to attach the different pieces and bring them together as one scene.
